What STEM means at Boulevard Elementary School

At Boulevard Elementary, learning extends beyond classroom walls into the living world around us. As a STEM-focused school, we believe students learn best when they are inspired to explore, investigate, and apply their knowledge to authentic, real-world challenges. Through inquiry-based learning and a strong connection to the natural environment, Boulevard students experience science and mathematics not as isolated subjects, but as practical ways to understand, question, and improve the world around them.

Our outdoor learning spaces serve as living laboratories—where curiosity takes root, discovery grows, and problem solving becomes part of everyday learning. Students engage in interdisciplinary projects that blend technology, engineering, and environmental studies, preparing them to think critically, collaborate effectively, and innovate with purpose.

Boulevard Elementary’s approach reflects Kokomo School Corporation’s mission to cultivate globally minded, compassionate learners who thrive in a changing world. Through community partnerships and hands-on experiences, students develop a sense of responsibility to both their local environment and the wider global community.

We are committed to nurturing confident, creative, and capable learners who see themselves as scientists, engineers, and caretakers of their world. At Boulevard, every child is empowered to explore boldly, think deeply, and lead with curiosity and compassion.

What makes our STEM program stand out

STEM Implementation K-12-to-Career

STEM is a pillar to the WD approach to education and preparing students as functioning members of the community by being exposed to the increasingly technology driven world. Between the three STEM labs, every student is exposed to the career opportunities available with STEM.

STEM Promotion

STEM Day and other events throughout the year expose students on what is to come as

their educational journey in the building continues. Elementary students are exposed to

opportunities at the high school, and high school students are exposed to industry

employers looking for talent or mentorship opportunities.

Diversified Options for all Secondary Ed Students, College and Workforce Bound

WD hosts several different NLPS pathways that allow students to explore their interests in

engineering, digital media, cybersecurity, information technology, business operations, and more. There is not another school of this size offering such a vast array of career exploration

opportunities.

Outdoor Learning Program

At Boulevard Elementary, students in K–2 learn through a unique outdoor, nature-based STEAM program inspired by Forest Kindergartens in Denmark. Our outdoor classroom removes walls and ceilings, allowing children to investigate, explore, and problem-solve in the natural environment.

Students use found materials—like rocks, sticks, and logs—to count, build, design, and create. They climb trees, observe wildlife, hike trails, collaborate with peers, and learn that there is no bad weather—just bad clothing. Daily outdoor learning is intentionally aligned to Indiana State Standards and foundational skills, supporting curiosity, resilience, confidence, and teamwork.

Inspiring Females in STEM

Boulevard Elementary is committed to empowering young female learners to see themselves as scientists, engineers, innovators, and leaders. Through community partnerships with IU Kokomo, Duke Energy, Purdue Women in Engineering, and other local STEM professionals, students connect with real female role models who share their experiences and inspire new possibilities.

By providing hands-on learning, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to real STEM careers, Boulevard helps build confidence, curiosity, and a strong sense of belonging. Our goal is to spark early interest and ensure girls see STEM as a meaningful and exciting pathway for their future.

We believe representation matters—and every student deserves to see themselves in STEM.

STEM & Robotics Courses

At Boulevard Elementary, every STEM unit is intentionally linked to a real-world STEM career. Through our CREATE2THINK curriculum, students explore authentic problems and projects while learning how STEM skills are applied in the world around them.

To bring these careers to life, we partner with local experts and organizations who provide hands-on demonstrations, classroom visits, and field-based experiences. These meaningful connections help students see themselves in future STEM roles while understanding the pathways that lead there.

For example, during our aviation unit, pilots from Flying Squirrels Flight Training met with students to share how planes fly and what it takes to become a pilot. In another unit, students visited the KACC Veterinary Science Program, gaining firsthand experience caring for animals and learning about careers in veterinary medicine.

By pairing classroom learning with real professionals and authentic experiences, Boulevard students develop curiosity, confidence, and a clear sense of possibility for their futures.
